Food product hierarchy

The “food product” branch of FoodOn contains FoodOn contains a hierarchy of over 9,600 generic food product categories, organized under a top-level set of facets for describing food products with respect to (for example) number of ingredients, qualities, or processes that led to them. A given food product can be linked to any one of the food product facets. The objective of this evolving food product branch is to provide unambiguous, easy to reference common but generic food products, for example, a can of kidney beans – but not a can of 99% fat free black beans produced by a certain manufacturer.

In a graph database, a given food item should be organized as an instance of a food product class.
