We have the following general model for the relationship between bean plants and various bean products. It recognizes that beans come in pods, and sometimes the entire pod is the edible product. Sometimes beans are harvested raw, then dried; otherwise beans are dried on their stalks, harvested, and then extracted. Dried beans (pulses) are usually rehydrated before consumption.

“bean substance” is a very general reference that doesn’t imply any more information about what is observed other than that it is food material derived via some process(es) from whole beans.¬†Currently in many cases a bean product class won’t have this, but instead links to underlying classes directly.

This model can then be applied to a specific variety of bean. One can skip applying the whole model to every bean, i.e. here “bean pod” is not included.
