Organizations such as USDA, EFSA and GS1 have food categorization schemes that offer their own hierarchy and organizing principles which FoodOn will map to in the future.

In 2021 FoodOn will be connecting EFSA FoodEx2 and US CFR agency food category with a “has member” object property to the appropriate FoodOn food product category .
The “agency food product type” hierarchy is logically insulated from the more richly axiomatized FoodOn “food product” polyhierarchy by way of a “has member” relation. An agency product category may have a ‘has member’ relation indicating it covers a FoodOn product type for mapping purposes, so a reasoner will not make more direct equivalency inferences between the two hierarchies.
